GREEN NETWORK
What is the Green Network?
The Green Network is a multi agency partnership, working with communities towards improving the urban environment. The Green Network is facilitated by the Foothold Group a Llanelli based Community Regeneration Company, together with partners Carmarthenshire County Council, Llanelli Town & Rural Council, Welsh Development Agency, Countryside Council for Wales, Environment Agency and Community groups.
What does Green Network do?
Works closely with the community to identify environmental needs, such as:
• Improving footpaths & cycle ways
• Enhancing street furniture
• Maximising opportunities for new planting
• Developing child play areas
Green Network Projects Include:
Penyfan South Regeneration Scheme
The flagship project of the Green Network is the Penyfan South Regeneration Scheme, a 6 hectare former industrial and tip site adjacent to the Penyfan Estate.
Phase 2 of works, of a value of £650,000.00 have just been completed. A new cycle path and footpath network has been built, which combined with street lighting and CCTV cameras makes the whole area safer for the local community to use. Local young people have also been involved in the extensive planting of native trees and bulbs. Two feature children’s play areas have been added which are being used extensively and have been described by local residents as "the best Christmas present ever given to Penyfan”, reports Foothold Group Green Network Development Officer, Richard Davie.
The funding for this scheme has been raised entirely from grant funding from Carmarthenshire County Council 1Fund, New Opportunities Fund, Community Activity & Facilities Programme, Aggregates Tax Levy Scheme, Welsh Development Agency, Countryside Council for Wales and the Environment Agency.
Community Woodlands
Additionally the Green Network in partnership with PLTRA & Seaside Community Association has secured funding to the value of £360,000 for environmental improvement works including the planting of community woodlands at Seaside Park, Morfa Park, North Cefncaeau Open Space, Penyfan Park, Lower Bigyn Hill and Y Bwthyn Old People’s Home.
The Countryside Council for Wales have allocated the Green Network a grant of £30,000 towards projects at Box Cemetery, Bryngwyn Comprehensive School, Health & Well Being Allotment, Bacci Estate in Burry Port, Swiss Valley Woodland Walk, and St John Lloyd School.
