HEALTH & WELLBEING

“I revolve my whole social life around the Project and friends who live elsewhere are envious that they have nothing like this where they live." Mrs.H,Llwynhendy, Llanelli

“My whole quality of life has improved beyond measure since joining the Project as a member. I am healthier, happier and wealthier – I simply do not know what I would do without it!”
Mr E, Glanymor, Llanelli

“I have learnt so much from my experiences with the Health and Well Being Project. I attended their computer classes and can now use my digital camera and also email my friends and family. I then became a volunteer and love being able to help other people and have enjoyed attending their many different training courses.” _Mrs T, Tyisha, Llanelli

What is the Foothold Health and Well Being Project?

The Project is funded by the Big Lottery Fund for five years to provide outreach regular community-based activities for people over the age of 50 in five deprived wards in Llanelli. We are in our fifth year and facilitate programmes to cover every aspect of Health and Well Being – exercise, social and fun events, complementary therapies, welfare benefit support, lifelong learning, telephone befriending, information and advice, health campaigns, home and personal safety, music, arts and crafts, nutritional programmes and health promotion volunteering. Activities are very wide-ranging, offered at different times of the day, with something to appeal to everyone – we also have our own minibus with disabled facilities to ensure everyone can access our programmes. Activities are suggested and chosen by older people themselves and are therefore very well attended and supported.

The Project Team
We have 6 highly qualified members of staff and over 100 volunteers. In addition we also use appropriately trained, experienced and insured instructors to facilitate activities on our behalf and work closely with our Partners to provide and deliver safe, quality programmes and services.

Project Success
• we have helped 9,500 people using 96 different venues.
• We provide around 40 different types of activity per week using qualified and insured instructors and trained volunteers aged 16 and over.
• Over £700,000 in welfare benefits has been raised by us for eligible older people.
• The Project has a registered membership of over 700 people who take part in our regular health and well being programmes of activity.
• We are held as a ‘model of excellence’ by organisations such as Age Concern, The Wales Centre for Health, University of Glamorgan, The Men’s Health Forum, The Countryside Council for Wales and other Healthy Living Centres across the UK.
• We will shortly receive accreditation for the European ‘Investors in Volunteers’ Award – a challenging honour to achieve and something we are extremely proud of.
